
Geghard Monastery is located 9 miles away from Harney in the province of Kotayk. The entire monastery complex was built in XII-XIII th centuries and was initially called the cave monastery, but later was renamed in Geghard (which means - Spear), as Christ was pierced with a spear by a Roman legionary, according to a legend. Geghard monastery consists of the main church - Katoghike, two churches, carved into the cliff, the vestibule, the chapel and the temple of the Holy Virgin. All of these ancient buildings are open for tourists and believers
