Schleswig-Holstein - the most northern land area of Germany is located in the southern part of Jutland Peninsula and is washed by waters of the North and the Baltic Seas. It shares borders with Denmark – to the north, to the south - with a free city of Hamburg, as well as Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony. The capital city is Kiel.
The federal state of Schleswig-Holstein was formed from the former duchies of Schleswig and Holstein in 1866 after the Austro-Prussian War. State’s borders remain unchanged since 1920, survived even during Second World War and postwar division of Europe.
Due to its location between two seas, an important role in the provincial economy play fishing and shipbuilding industries; two-thirds of German fishing fleet has registration in local ports. Nevertheless, the main sources of state’s income are agriculture and tourism. About 13 million tourists annually come here to admire attractions of Schleswig-Holstein - ancient castles and beautiful city of Luebeck. Island of Helgoland, located in the North Sea, the North Frisian Islands and the "Holstein Switzerland" - inland lake district of the province, will give an unforgettable experience to fans of ecotourism.
