North Rhine-Westphalia is the federal state in western Germany. It shares borders with the federal state of Lower Saxony, Hessen and Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as with Belgium and the Netherlands. This is the most densely populated area of Germany - home to approximately 18 millions of people. Famous Ruhr used to be “the industrial heart of Germany”. Not long ago its appearance was determined by smoking factory’s chimneys and power plants, blast furnaces and high-voltage power lines. Today, thanks to a new Environmental Policy, carried from 60 th years of the last century, 2 /3 of North Rhine-Westphalian territory is occupied by fields, woods and meadows. 14 natural reserves were established there. Primal nature with fairy-tale castles, surrounded by the water, has preserved in the city of Muenster vicinities. They are engaged in horseback riding and horses breeding here.
Diversity is one of distinguishing features of North Rhine-Westphalia. Pastoral tranquility of natural reserves is adjacent to turbulent city’s life. There are 54 universities, where about 500 thousand students are educated.
North Rhine - Westphalia is famous for its museums of classical and contemporary art. There are 570 museums and 75000 architectural monuments, protected by the state here.
