The town of Melnik, hidden among sand pyramids, is the smallest in Bulgaria. Its population is less than three hundred inhabitants. But so was not always. Thracians were the first who chose these lands. Export of famous wine and tobacco made the city prosperous and successful. A heyday came to the XVIII - XIX centuries. More than a dozen of churches were built in the city. Particularly rich residents built multi-storey houses. In those days in Melnik was about 20 000 of residents.
