Lower Saxony is the second largest state of Germany. It shares borders with several federal states of Germany and the Netherlands. To the south-east its natural boundary is the Harz mountains, to the north - the North Sea.
The landscape of Lower Saxony can be divided into three natural zones: the Harz mountains range, mountainous terrain about the Weser river and in the center - the North European Plain with the Lüneburg Heath.
The сapital is Hanover. Free cities (Kreisfreie Städte): Brunswick, Wilhelmshaven, Wolfsburg, Delmenhorst, Salzgitter, Oldenburg, Osnabruck, Emden. On the territory of Lower Saxony there are two else big free Hanseatic cities - Bremen and Hamburg, which have their own status of federal states.
Agriculture is in the basis of Lower Saxony's economy, thank to local soils - the most fertile in Germany. Automotive, shipbuilding and fishing industries are also highly developed here. Wolfsburg homes the headquarters of famous Volkswagen Group.
