Mount Athos is the unique monastic republic, located on the eastern "finger" of Halkidiki. In its monasteries are gathered untold riches, jewels, icons and manuscripts. For almost a thousand years, women are not allowed to visit the holy land of Athos. In the heyday of Mount Athos, there were built 40 monasteries, where about 40,000 monks used to live. Now, there are 20 valid monasteries, which are home to about 2000 brothers. Men, wishing to visit Mount Athos monasteries, should get a special permit; the rest finish their journey in Ouranopolis.
Excursion to Mount Athos begins from a small pier of Holy Virgin, located on Sithonia. Marine vessel will take you to the shores of Mount Athos. Sailing along the west coast of the peninsula, you will get an opportunity to enjoy a unique picture of Hagion Oros monasteries, built in virgin natural environment some 10 centuries ago.
