Must-See Museums in Southwest Idaho

When one thinks of Idaho, first thoughts are often of the beautiful mountains, great fishing, exciting whitewater or one-of-a-kind bike trails. Idaho\'s cities also have much to offer. The museums in Boise and the surrounding area let visitors learn about the local wildlife and experience the culture and history that helped shape the area.

--Visit the Basque Museum and Cultural Center to learn about the heritage and culture of the Basque people in Idaho. See the newest exhibit, Hidden in Plain Sight: The Basques, which was previously on display at Ellis Island National Monument Museum.

--At the Old Idaho Penitentiary, tour the cell blocks, gallows, solitary confinement and grounds. The Old Pen was built from sandstone quarried from the foothills that surround it, and is one of only four territorial penitentiaries still open for tours.

--The Idaho Botanical Garden, once Old Penitentiary land, is home to a variety of themed gardens including the Children’s Adventure Garden, Lewis & Clark Native Plant Garden, Garden Woods and the Foothills Native Plant Garden. Concerts are held in the summer months.

--Boise Art Museum – The museum creates visual arts experiences, engages people, and inspires learning through exceptional exhibitions, collections, and educational opportunities.

--Visitors to the World Center for Birds of Prey can see live birds of prey, including the Peregrine Falcon, Harpy Eagle, Aplomado Falcon, and more. Enjoy bird demonstrations, falconry tours, and the Condor Cliffs California Condor exhibit, or take a walk on the interpretive trail overlooking the city.

--The Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa is one of the most unique attractions in the Treasure Valley, representing the American experience of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The museum houses a world of sweetheart pillows, ration books, “V Mail”, and other items representing the home front during times of war. A large collection of airplanes and equipment includes two of only a few remaining Curtiss P-40 World War II fighter airplanes in the world, a very rare World War II P-51C Razorback Mustang fighter, two German fighter planes and two Korean War era jets.

-- Celebration Park in Melba is Idaho\'s largest archaelogical park and is located at the edge of the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area. See huge basalt melon gravels and 100 to 10,000 year old petroglyphs, throw an atlatl, take a walking tour of the historic Guffey Railroad Bridge and learn about the area\'s early mining and railroad history. The Canyon Crossroads Transportation Museum is expected to open in the park this year.

Guess What\'s Turning 150?

Help us celebrate two birthdays this year! The Idaho Territory and the City of Boise are both celebrating their sesquicentennial in 2013.

Idaho Territory

On the morning of March 4, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed a congressional act creating the Idaho Territory. On July 3, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed a congressional act establishing Idaho as the 43rd state. The 27-year territorial era between those two signatures was perhaps the most significant quarter century in Idaho’s history, shaping who we are as a state today. www.history.idaho.gov/idaho-150.

Idaho State Historical Museum Exhibit

Essential Idaho: 150 Things that Make the Gem State Unique

This exhibit is one of the largest ever shown at the Museum and features rare artifacts, hands-on learning stations, and compelling stories about our fascinating state.

Lincoln Legacy exhibition

The collection is the most significant grouping of contemporary artifacts ever assembled relating to the relationship of Abraham Lincoln and the Rocky Mountain West.

Boise

The Boise Department of Arts and History has compiled a list of activities, events, workshops, river walks, historic tours and a lecture series that will take place throughout 2013 to commemorate the city’s founding 150 years ago. Boise’s Sesqui-Shop has rotating theme exhibits and offers items representative of Boise for sale. www.boise150.org.

May 17, Carlisle Floyd\'s Opera Susannah, Egyptian Theater

Opera Idaho presents Susannah, a metaphor for McCarthyism, it represents a period of the intense fear of communism in America during the early 1950s. The opera premiered in 1955, also the year of a sex scandal that brought Boise to national attention as an anti-homosexuality frenzy gripped the city and destroyed lives and reputations. www.operaidaho.org.

July 7, Anniversary Weekend in Julia Davis Park

July 7, 1863 marks the date Boise was officially platted. This celebration will round out the array of activities planned for the 4th of July weekend.
