Australia’s tourism offering was ranked 11th in the world in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013, released this week by the World Economic Forum. The report compares factors such as transport connectivity, infrastructure, natural resources, health, safety, policy settings and environmental sustainability amongst 140 countries worldwide. “This is a fantastic achievement and testament to Australia’s enduring popularity amongst international visitors,” said Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy.
“As the World Economic Forum rightly identifies, we have some great natural assets – notably our pristine natural environment – as well as other competitive strengths we have generated for ourselves, such our impressive aviation links and tourism infrastructure,” said Mr McEvoy. Mr McEvoy said Australia’s tourism industry was learning to adapt to the lack price competitiveness caused by the strong Australian economy and dollar. “Australia is not a high volume destination, nor is it ever likely to be given the tyranny of time and distance. We’re a boutique destination, and one which does involve an investment to visit,” Mr McEvoy said.“The challenge for our industry is the same at it has always been – to convert our enduring appeal into more visits, greater dispersal and more spending by delivering great value for experience and accentuating those unique and distinctive things which help differentiate ourselves from our rivals.”
