Design September 2012 presents a spectrum of events in World Design Capital Helsinki 2012

The busiest month of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 offers an extensive overview of design. During Design September 2012, World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 will be livelier and more international than ever. Approximately 200 events, which are predominantly free-of-charge, will delight visitors in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The international design community will participate in the events and the exhibitions. The programme is within everyone\'s reach and easily accessible.

The central events of Design September 2012 include the Everyday Discoveries – International Design House Exhibition in Suvilahti, Helsinki Design Week, the Habitare Fair, the launch of activities at the Abattoir, and the finale at the Pavilion. The event venues are Suvilahti, the Old Customs Warehouse, the Cable Factory, the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre, the Abattoir area and the Pavilion.

“September will be the busiest and most international month of the whole of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. Such an explosion of design has never before been seen in Finland. Participating in the event is easy since most of the events are open for everyone,\" says Pekka Timonen, Executive Director of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

Making everyday discoveries in Suvilahti

WDC Helsinki 2012’s main international exhibition, Everyday Discoveries – International Design House Exhibition brings household design treasures from 23 countries for people to see and experience. Everyday Discoveries – International Design House Exhibition, which is free-of-charge, will provide things to see and do for the whole family in Suvilahti, Helsinki during Helsinki Design Week between 6 and 16 September 2012.

Everyday Discoveries includes a container village, a café, a design shop and an urban garden. The participating countries will provide entertainment for the visitors from lectures to parties. The visitors will have a chance to experience a North American children’s play park or try out Irish hurling, among many other things. Finland\'s exhibition will present design solutions for the extreme northern conditions.

Helsinki Design Week and Habitare more international than ever

The annual Helsinki Design Week and Habitare Fair form the foundation of Design September. Helsinki Design Week will be celebrated between 6 and 16 September 2012, and Habitare will be open between 12 and 16 September. Both the major events are more international this year than ever before.

“The effect of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 is clear. Interest in Finland is high, and Helsinki is seen as a centre of design and a place worth presenting oneself. For me, the highlights of September are the new exhibition space to be launched at the Old Customs Warehouse, and the Cable Factory project in which international design exhibitions come together with 200,000 Lego bricks and an art exhibition,” says Kari Korkman, Director of Helsinki Design Week.

During design week Helsinki hosts the meeting of world\'s design weeks. The idea is to build a new network and study the possibilities for cooperation. 11 event organizers participate in the meeting.

There will also be international guests at various seminars. The European New Towns Platform (ENTP) conference, Suburban Design, held between 12 and 14 September 2012, will spread around Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa, and Feeling for Wood will gather experts in wood architecture and design in Lahti between 4 and 7 September 2012; both events are part of WDC Helsinki 2012’s international encounters. Lahti’s Feeling for Wood will be open to the general public, and there will be a daily free transport link between Helsinki and Lahti.

Farewell to the Pavilion

There will be a final flourish at the Pavilion before it is closed on Sunday 16 September 2012. September’s programme will include the seniors’ weekend; the HEL/LO – Let’s Talk dialogue between Helsinki and London, and the last Make Helsinki workshop of the summer. The closing weekend will bring together the summer’s best moments. There will be dancing, art classes, films and discussions on better cities.

Increase in the number of exhibitions

The international stance is also evident in the exhibitions on offer as BMW Art Cars arrives at Emma from 1 September until 31 October 2012. The exhibition comes directly from the London Olympics to Finland and presents six unique art cars. Some of the best of Finnish design will be seen between 14 September and 14 October 2012 at Galerie Forsblom, which showcases impressive industrial sculptures at an exhibition carrying the artist\'s name, Harri Koskinen – mute.

Helsinki Konsthalle’s Tomás Saraceno exhibition, Amos Anderson Art Museum’s Boutique and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma’s Camouflage form an extensive entity in Helsinki City Centre, which reflects on the connection between art and design. EMMA’s Nordic Design Today 2012 and WeeGee’s Futuro exhibitions continue their success in Espoo. Design Museum, the Museum of Finnish Architecture, Helsinki City Museums and numerous smaller galleries and studios will keep going strong with their exhibitions.
