Happy tourism season!
June 2010 | No 15
Together with the whole RDÉE Yukon team, I would like to recognize the excellent work done by every entrepreneur and worker in the Yukon tourism industry. Thanks to you, the offer of tourism products in the territory is attractive and varied. Your contribution to the Yukon economy is by all means extremely important, as tourism impacts on all the other sectors of the economy.
I wish you a tourism season that exceeds your expectations!
Annie-Claude Dupuis
Tourism Project Officer, RDÉE Yukon
Tourism promotion in French
The second edition of the Tourism Brochure is now available
Following the success of the first edition of the Tourism Brochure, all 5,000 copies of which were distributed, we have decided to create a second edition with a run of 8,000 copies. In it you will find the faces of Yukon Francophones, historical facts about the Yukon Francophone community and much more!
The Brochure was distributed as an insert in the June 9 edition of the newspapers l’Aurore boréale and l’Aquilon (the Francophone newspaper distributed in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut). You can also pick up copies at the Yukon Visitors’ Centres. The articles have been translated and will be published every Friday in the Yukon News until August 27. Click here to see the electronic version of the Tourism Brochures (in French only).
Familiarization trips for travel professionals and Francophone media
On June 9, RDÉE Yukon organized an evening that provided an opportunity for six French tour operators and the person in charge of relations with the tourism industry for the Canadian Tourism Commission in France to meet tourism businesses and organizations offering services and products in French in the Yukon. Who are the Francophone visitors to the Yukon?
Last May, RDÉE Yukon hired a consultant to analyze the standard profile of a Francophone visitor to the Yukon. Here are some data from this analysis:
- 25% of French visitors had already visited the Yukon.
- Half of the tourists from France and 1/3 of tourists from Quebec want to come back for a second visit.
- 32.5% of French visitors bought an organized tour.
- Visitors from France and Quebec spend an average of 8 nights or more during their stay in the Yukon.
- The Internet and Milepost seem to be the most used tools for visitors from France, while those from Quebec prefer the Internet and the Yukon Tourism Guide.
- Visitors from France spend on average $97.12 per day per visitor.
- 65% of French visitors appreciated the services in French they received during their stay.
Upcoming
Training
A Yukon Francophone cultural tourism product
Starting this fall, RDÉE Yukon will undertake a feasibility study on the creation and the development of a Yukon Francophone cultural tourism product that could be marketed to all tourism clients. Such a product would be an added value for the Yukon as a tourism destination for Francophone markets.
Upcoming survey
In a few weeks, we will be sending you a short survey to find out what your needs are and get your suggestions for training sessions and networking opportunities. Until then, you can contact us with your comments.

Your Visitors are Taking Environmental Action? Reward Them!
To stimulate demand for sustainable tourism, there may be a greater need for financial incentives for consumers and businesses. Small businesses might especially benefit from financial incentives for implementing operational changes that lead to net resource conservation from measures such as rebates and tax breaks. If the savings were passed onto consumers, it might lead to greater demand and result in faster industry performance improvements. Financial incentives, even if small, have the capacity to draw the attention of market segments (such as the masses that are not yet eco-conscious) and encourage participation in initiatives that may be educational and raise awareness. Participate in the YTEC photo contest
During Canada Tourism Week, the Yukon Tourism Education Council (YTEC) is organizing a photo context. Send them a picture of a tourism employee doing what they do best – making a client’s experience unforgettable! The draw will take place on June 30. You have until June 29 to send in your photo. You could win a $100.00 gift certificate for your favourite restaurant.
