Las Cruces, N.M. - New Mexico\'s Centennial kickoff event, the New Mexico Centennial SalsaFest! will kick off itself with some big names in New Mexico. The keynote speaker will be New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez. She will be joined by U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce as well as Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima and others from Las Cruces and New Mexico.
New Mexico was signed into statehood by President William Howard Taft on January 6, 1912.
New Mexico Centennial SalsaFest! opening ceremonies begin at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, August 28, at the intersection of La Placita and Main Street, just south of the historic Rio Grande Theatre. They will be followed at noon by a rededication at Las Cruces and Main of the north end of downtown\'s Main Street (Las Cruces to Mountain) where there will be approximately one hundred classic cars on display.
Downtown Las Cruces Partnership\'s SalsaFest! enters its third year with big names and big expectations. In addition to the opening ceremonies, street rededication, and classic cars, there will be the salsa tasting contest, salsa booth contest, salsa music, salsa dancing, the New Mexico Centennial Storyteller, the New Mexico Centennial Hot Air Balloon, and other attractions for the whole family. Guests from within and without New Mexico\'s state borders are expected at this event on Las Cruces\' revitalizing Main Street.
Other Las Cruces events coming in commemoration of 100 years of statehood include The Hour of the Signing at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum and The Centennial Ramble on Main Street on January 6, 2012; the Centennial Parade downtown and the Centennial Ball at the Amador Hotel on January 7, 2012; 100 Years of New Mexico Art at the Las Cruces Museum of Art in February, 2012; the Centennial Choral Celebration at the Rio Grande Theatre on June 16, 2012; the Dedication of Centennial High School in August, 2012; the Reopening of Downtown Main Street in September, 2012; and the Opening of the Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science in November, 2012. Additional events are being planned and will be shared by the Mesilla Valley Centennial Planning Committee as they are confirmed.
Las Cruces is not only kicking off Centennial commemorations in New Mexico, it is also presenting a wide array of special events here over the next fifteen months.
